Web Developer Education Requirements

The most common degree is in computer science, but web developers are a diverse group and have many areas of focus. A web developer that works on graphics and design, for instance, will have an arts and communication focus, whereas the developer that works on backend coding will have more of a technical focus. Certifications are very important in the programming world as well. Since software technologies are always changing, a developer's certifications can be more important than the degree itself. Therefore, ideally, all programmers should be committed to ongoing education.

Web Developer Job Market

There are approximately 113, 000 web developers in the workforce. That continues a trend of job growth, and salary increase, within the field. These numbers do not reflect self-employed web developers, which represents a significant population as well. The vast majority of web developer positions are found in the computer systems design and information services domains. Nevertheless, there is also expanding availability in other domains such as consulting, advertising and public relations. Educated, skilled web developers can also fill numerous analyst and programmer jobs.

Wed Developer Salary

The median salary for web developers in the U.S. is $33.50 per hour or $69, 680 per year, which is up $3 per hour over the previous available statistics. The average salary for entry-level web developers is $16.13 per hour, and the average salary for the top 10 percent is $50.58 per hour. According to statistics, location within the U.S. does not have a significant effect on salary.
